TEACHER ENHANCEMENT AT LEWIS (TEAL)

The Educational Programs Office is offering a series of professional development workshops for the academic school year 2002-2003.

These workshops are designed to introduce teachers to aerospace education as well as provide hands-on activities for use in the classroom and an opportunity to see the NASA Glenn Research Center.

These workshops will model the Ohio State framework and the national standards for science, mathematics, and technology. NASA literature and teaching guides will be provided as part of the workshop.

Goals and Objectives

The goal of the workshops is to promote a strong science, mathematics, and technology educational base for elementary, middle, and high school teachers and to acquaint participants with current NASA enterprises and missions.

Participants will:

  • learn about Glenn's role in the different enterprises and missions
  • engage in hands-on activities to enhance curriculum and lesson plans
  • become acquainted with NASA education materials
  • learn how to access NASA information through the internet

Selection

Attendance is limited. Teachers will be selected on a first come, first served basis. We encourage you to submit your registration early along with your registration fee.

Certificate of Participation

At the conclusion of each workshop, the Educational Programs Office will give a Certificate of Participation to each attendee.

Workshop Hours and Details

The workshops will be held at the NASA Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field in Cleveland, OH. Each workshop will be structured with registration from 8:30-9:00, the program (hands-on activities with aerospace education specialists, tours (dependent on availability) and presentations by NASA scientists and/or engineers) from 9:00 to 3:00. An optional meteorite/lunar certification will be available Literature and teaching guides will be provided at no cost. Registration must be received by the deadline date indicated by each workshop listed.

November 19 and 20, 2002- Forces and Motion

Workshop will focus on the center of mass of an object which is the key to understanding how objects respond to various forces. This concept will be related to moving furniture, spinning tops and how airplanes fly. Celebrate the Centennial Flight in your classroom by connecting flight to the concepts of forces and motion.

November 19 is for educators of grades 5-8
November 20 is for educators of grades K-4

Deadline for registration is November 6,2002

December 10- SPACE RESEARCH and YOU

Fire balls, sleeping astronauts, kidney stones, and spongelike rocks are all part of the mix of experiments and research that will occupy the crew of the STS-107 mission in July. The flight will serve as a bridge from research conducted aboard the Space Shuttle
in the 1980s and '90s and the long-term work planned for the International Space Station when it is completed.

Microgravity - the condition in orbit where it appears that gravity is turned off - has become a powerful tool for studying the inner workings of flames, human cells, sand, and many other natural phenomena. On Earth these studies run into limitations imposed by
gravity's effects. So, we turn to space as a place to overcome those limits and push science and technology on many fronts.

Join us to learn about the research that will be conducted on board STS 107's flight in January and how to connect this current research to your classroom. Workshop will feature Biological and Physical Research for grades 7 through 12.

Deadline for registration is November 26,2002

February 10 and 11 - Technology Workshop

Bring technology into your classroom . Learn to set-up and connect to Webcasts, and chat rooms . Discover NASA's new system to find the resources you need within a few clicks using e-NASA.
February 10 is for educators of grades K-6
February 11 is for educators of grades 7-12

Deadline for registration is January 28, 2003

March 21- Amusement Park Physics

Amusement Park Physics with a NASA Twist
Planning a Physics Day trip to the amusement park? Teachers will try out classroom activities to prepare students to collect data at the park. This workshop marks the debut of a new NASA educator's guide that has been pilot tested with 1500 students. Students collect data on ride heights, speeds, and accelerations using simple, inexpensive altimeters and accelerometers. No trigonometry is required. Educator's Guide included. Workshop geared for educators grades 5-12.

Deadline for registration is March 7, 2003

April 9 and April 10 Space Day Activities

Space Day is May 1,2003 with the theme "Celebrating the Future of Flight". Attend this workshop to get ideas and activities to celebrate.
April 9 is for educators grades K-4
April 10 is for educators grades 5-8

Deadline for registration is March 26,2003
